How to Make Editable Anki Cards from a PDF | CardForge AI

Turn a readable PDF into editable Anki cards: select useful pages, review the draft, export a native .apkg file, and import it into Anki.

You can turn a readable PDF into editable Anki cards when it contains facts you need to retrieve later: definitions, thresholds, mechanisms, classifications, and distinctions. It is less useful when the PDF is mostly images, tables, or broad background reading.

The best workflow is not “convert every page into cards.” Select the sections worth memorizing, make a reviewable batch, and keep the original document available while you review the cards.

Start with a text-based PDF

A text-based PDF lets you select and copy its text. Lecture handouts, clinical guidelines, textbooks exported from a publisher, and research summaries often work well.

Scanned PDFs are different: each page is an image. Use OCR before you create cards, and check the text carefully. A single OCR error can turn a good card into a wrong answer.

Select the facts that deserve a card

Before generating cards, choose pages or passages that contain one of these patterns:

  • A definition: “X is defined as…”
  • A direct relationship: “X causes Y” or “X is associated with Y”
  • A mechanism or ordered process
  • A threshold, indication, exclusion, or rule
  • A comparison between two similar concepts

Skip introductions, repeated headers, citations, and prose that only gives broad context. A card should test one useful fact, not ask you to reconstruct a full paragraph.

Use Basic cards for direct recall

Basic cards are best when the prompt can be specific. For example:

Front: What does antibiotic prophylaxis aim to prevent before an intervention?

Back: Infection caused by organisms likely to be associated with that procedure.

This is clearer than asking “What is important about antibiotic prophylaxis?” The question tells the learner exactly what to retrieve.

Use Cloze cards when the sentence structure matters

Cloze cards work well when the surrounding wording helps you remember a relationship.

Text: Antibiotic prophylaxis should target the {{c1::likely organisms associated with the procedure}}.

Do not hide several unrelated facts in one cloze deletion. If a sentence contains two testable ideas, create two notes.

Review against your source before export

PDF extraction can introduce broken line breaks, repeated headers, and missing characters. Review each card against your original document. Remove vague cards, correct terminology, and keep the final answer concise.

In CardForge AI, selected material is used only during the active generation request. The app does not save or export the uploaded file, full text, page references, or source quotes. If you want a reminder in Anki, add your own concise note to Extra before export.

Import the cards into Anki

Download the native .apkg package, then open it with Anki or choose File > Import. Anki packages keep the note types and cards together, so a native .apkg import does not require manual field mapping. Field mapping is only relevant when you import a text format such as TXT or CSV. Anki’s official package import guide explains how package imports behave when a collection already contains related notes.

For the full workflow, start with PDF to Anki Flashcards or use the Anki Cloze Generator when your material is already pasted as text.

Decide whether the PDF is worth converting

Not every PDF should become an Anki deck. Some documents are designed for reference, not memorization. A strong PDF source contains compact facts that you will need to recall later. A weak source contains long background discussion, low-density prose, decorative slides, scanned pages, or tables that do not extract cleanly.

Before generating cards, skim the document and ask what kind of memory task it supports. A clinical guideline may support cards about diagnostic criteria, exclusions, classifications, and treatment indications. A textbook chapter may support definitions, mechanisms, and comparisons. A vocabulary PDF may support word-to-meaning cards. A research paper may only support a few cards from the methods or results section, while the introduction may not be worth memorizing.

This decision saves credits and review time. The aim is not to turn every page into flashcards. The aim is to turn the useful parts of a PDF into small prompts you can answer repeatedly.

Select pages before asking for cards

Page selection is a cost and quality control. If a PDF has eighteen pages but only the first ten are relevant, process those ten. If a long document has one dense section, process only that section. AI can summarize and organize material, but focused input usually produces a cleaner Credit estimate and better cards. Smaller batches are also easier to compare with the document before exporting to Anki.

When the document is short, processing all pages is fine. When the document is long, use page ranges. Good page selection also makes later checking easier because you know which part of your document the cards came from.

For documents with very little text per page, the page preview may look short because the PDF itself has sparse text, headers, or extracted fragments. The preview is meant to confirm that the file is readable and that the selected pages contain the right kind of material. It is not meant to be a full reading environment.

Write a specific instruction

When using AI to make cards from a PDF, describe the cards you want. The same source can produce different decks depending on the goal.

For vocabulary learning, you might write: “Extract academic English terms from these pages. Put English on the Front and Chinese meanings on the Back. Keep answers short and add tags.”

For professional concepts, you might write: “Create Basic Anki cards for exam review. Focus on definitions, diagnostic criteria, mechanisms, thresholds, and distinctions. Keep each answer concise.”

For same-language memorization, you might write: “Create Chinese Basic cards that help recall key terms and concise explanations from this document. Do not translate.”

The instruction tells the AI what to ignore. Without it, a model may create cards from background sentences or choose a card type that does not match your study goal.

Use card count as an upper limit

If you ask for thirty cards, that should not force the model to create thirty weak cards. The better behavior is to create up to thirty useful cards and reject filler. Dense pages may support the full number. Sparse pages may not.

A serious PDF workflow usually creates more than five cards. Ten cards are a quick sample. Twenty to fifty cards are common for a real study batch. More than fifty can be useful, but only if you are prepared to review and edit them before import.

The card count should also match the learner’s daily review capacity. A perfect deck that is too large to inspect becomes risky. A small deck that proves the workflow is good can be followed by another batch from the next section.

Keep Basic and Cloze separate

Basic and Cloze notes have different import fields and review behavior. Basic cards ask a direct question and show a direct answer. Cloze cards hide a part of a sentence. Mixing them into one import file can create confusion in Anki.

Use Basic cards for definitions, thresholds, comparisons, and direct recall. Use Cloze cards when the original wording is useful, such as a rule, phrase, or sentence with a meaningful blank. If a source sentence contains several unrelated blanks, split it into multiple notes or use Basic cards instead.

Use Extra for your own study notes

The Extra field is optional context for the note. You can write a short clarification, a memory cue, a course label, or a reminder to recheck a guideline. CardForge AI does not automatically fill it with your uploaded file name, page, or extracted source text.

This is especially important for professional material. A medical, legal, coding, or technical card can be wrong if it loses one condition or exception. Keep your source material and verify the card wording before you export it.

Import in a clean Anki workflow

After export, import the .apkg package into a temporary Anki profile if you are testing a new workflow. The package includes the matching Basic or Cloze note type, so you can browse the imported notes without recreating a field map. Use field mapping only with a TXT or CSV compatibility export. Keep HTML enabled only if the text export intentionally uses HTML formatting.

After import, browse the notes and review a few cards immediately. If the first cards feel vague, too long, or unsupported, fix the source prompt or reduce the selected page range before generating more.

This workflow is slower than a one-click conversion, but it produces cards you can trust. That is the real goal of making Anki cards from PDF files: not automation for its own sake, but a repeatable path from source material to reviewable memory.
